(H001) Bear
When I was 8 months pregnant with my first child, a
black bear kept appearing on the walk of the motel we owned
in Alaska. Sadly, instead of capturing and relocating
her - this shy black bear - we shot her. Ever since
then, I've had great sympathy for all bears, especially
black ones. So gently pulling a black bear into being
reveals a lot about me now, as shooting her in the past
revealed a lot about us then. |

(H002) Bird - Long Tail
Even before I was born, the sound of my mother's canaries
surrounded me. Birds of all kinds have been a big part
of my life, especially the ones who frequent our feeders
every winter. I'll never forget how comforting it was
to watch the birds at our feeder two winters ago - how
healthy it was for me to watch them for hours at a time as I
slowly recovered from cancer. Forming this bird in one
fluid set of motions continues to comfort and heal me as the
sparrows and songbirds did last year. |
