(H015) Egg -
Color Chart
One of the first concepts I heard expressed as a toddler
was the word "egg". My mom grew up on a
chicken hatchery here in East Saugatuck and carried her love
of fowl with her to Detroit, satisfying her upbringing
to raise canaries in our tiny apartment. My dad worked
as a pigment chemist which instilled within me a deep
passion for the color spectrum. Taking the beige and
tinted clay, weaving the colors together to simulate marble
or wood allows me to in turn express the influences of my
childhood. |

(H016) Elephant Head -
Color Chart
At this point it is the head of the elephant I'm most
focused upon, not letting the rest of the body interfere
with my drive to recreate the ears, trunk and brow of the
elephant, and last but not least - the eyes. I'm so
mindful of the elephant, whose ears are used to cool the
body and hear the voice of an elephant miles away. The
trunk, the elephants hand, able to perform complex
activities just like ours, and the brow hiding that
marvelous brain and most of all the eyes - the window to the
soul of an elephant. |

(H017) Face #1 -
Color Chart
Children who never got the chance to live.
Unborn and tiny infants dying before their time, going
before us to break trail - we who are left behind. I
am so aware of this; I experience it every time I make a
face. Of the two children I lost to miscarriages,
wondering their sex, wondering their personalities,
wondering....
Knowing that they and other infants are using my hands and
this clay to say "We still exist, we have power, we
love you." |

People love to watch me hatch my clay eggs into lifeforms. My website
is also like a clay egg - one I'm hatching right now.
